Real wood
Real wood kitchen cabinets are functional and beautiful — which is a great combination for homeowners who want a classic look for their kitchen design. Add to this the fact that real wood goes well with all kinds of interior styles ranging from traditional to contemporary.
Solid wood cabinetry usually involves materials such as maple, cherry or hickory, along with softwoods such as pine, acacia or fir – natural materials that can be stained any desired colour and easy to clean and maintain.
Veneer made of wood products such as MDF and oriented strand board (OSB) is covered with a thin coat of melamine that imitates the surface texture of solid wood – these more affordable products substitute for solid wood. You can also look for grain pattern and colour variances: if they are always the same or predominantly perfect, then this product is probably veneer.
Particleboard or MDF
Its superior density and strength make it a perfect base for melamine, thermofoil or veneer-backing and, unlike ordinary wood, it can be painted or lacquered with a heavy coat to become moisture-resistant – a tempting proposition for cost-conscious homeowners.
Made of recycled wood waste combined with urea-formaldehyde resin and wax, these timber panels are pressed under high heat amid a vacuum and then transferred to a press and mould to create the panels that we commonly see. Comparatively, MDF represents an excellent substitute for solid wood as it can be shaped more readily for custom carvings and inlays, having a good paintability (thanks to its smooth finish) and a tendency not to warp in the presence of moisture.
Wood particleboard (WPC) is made by bonding wood shavings and chips with synthetic glue. This is cheaper and less durable than solid wood, but hard enough for most uses. Unfortunately, as with laminated floors, low cost is associated with low resistance to expansion and cracks when exposed to moisture.
Doors
There are different types of kitchen cupboard doors. Your choice might affect the appearance of your kitchen, so it’s also worth thinking about whether each option will be easy to clean.
Modern and minimalist interiors would be ideal candidates for slab doors, specifically their smooth and continuous facade of uniform surface made of one single piece of material. With slab doors, there is more space to keep the clutter at bay – all other design complements such as hardware and countertops will receive more of an opportunity to shine through now than ever.
Paneled cabinet doors are a very classic look and can be used in traditional, traditional/transitional and very contemporary styles. Base cabinets will often best accommodate items that are heavy, like frying pans and kitchen appliances, so drawers can be the way to go with those items. But, for countertop kitchen appliances like a food processor or a stand mixer, shelves might be the way to go.
